Advocates for Law and Library

In line with the previous post, I asked my ENGL 1290 (Business and Professional Writing) class to help me construct an essay, given the following thesis statement and topic sentences. The context of this essay is a recent administrative decision to create a facility to house a school of law where they had previously planned a space for the library on campus to use as a computer training room. Comments from students in this post will be used to change the following sentences, building an essay where there was just an outline of sentences.
Thesis: We need to have more, not less, resources devoted to the library at Thompson Rivers University.
Library services appeal widely to every area of academic life.

Proper technology for proper numbers of students is vital, if librarians are to serve the university with excellence.

Librarians provide more than just information. Their goal is increased accessibility and assessability of information in the university community.

Concluding Thesis: The library at TRU should be expanded in accordance with the explosion of information available in our world.

The library is used for research and projects in all disciplines therefore it would be unjust to exclude a vast majority of our campus. Libraries are meant to benefit everyone and reserving it specifically for the law students seems to put them above the rest of the student body. Having available research training sessions for students will allow them to use their time more efficiently and improve their ability to learn. Since research is the building block of education and libraries facilitate research, eliminating library resources eliminates education.

  2. Librarians provide more than just information. Their goal is increased accessibility and assessability of information in the university community. The more interactive the learning process is on campus, the more usable knowledge each student will take away to the real world. Therefore, we need to give librarians the proper resources to best communicate with the student population in such areas as research and development of learning objectives. Librarians should have a broad understanding of academics at the university level so they can not only point students towards directly requested information, but also bring information to the table that will help the student understand the subject on a wider perspective. Librarians hold the key to our wealth of knowledge, in both electronic and written form.

  4. Proper technology for proper numbers is vital, if librarians are to serve the university with excellence. We should have a proper amount of computer spaces for the average size class. Students are less likely to use the resources individually then if they were to go with their class to learn how to use the library. If a student doesn't show initiative to go on their own, they won't learn how to properly use the resources that they pay for in their tuition. If there isn't an easy opportunity for students to learn or use the resources, then they won't use them at all. In addition, TRU Law will increase the already growing student population, and its services should reflect that.

  5. Library services appeal widely to all areas of academia, specifically the students representing their bodies of faculty. The library provides an area of quiet studying which is direly necessary in student success of all levels. As part of the busy student life, households and apartments are constantly busy and full of distracting noises and people. The library offers a place of sanctitude that may not be found elsewhere, and thus is the most direct service that will increase student success and peace.

There is currently a shortage of adequate student computer ratio. This creates a bottleneck effect throughout the active school year. The student population of Thompson Rivers University has been growing every year, yet the resources allocated for these students are far from adequate for both the students and library staff. It has become increasingly difficult for teachers and library staff alike to educate students using the current library resources. In order to even adequately fulfill the needs and goals of students and faculty alike, the only solution seems to be to create additional facilities for the library (if not in the House of Learning).

  7. Proper technology for proper numbers of students is vital if librarians are to serve the university with excellence. TRU has a growing student body; therefore increased computer access is vital for academic purposes. Also, because of the growing need of being able to access online resources, librarians need the interactive space available to educate students. Currently, access to computers in the TRU Library is a serious problem; there are not enough computers! By increasing space for students and librarians, TRU would improve their student’s ability to do research.
